My post to a mailing list failed because list moderators "failed to act" on it

Scenario: You sent a post to a mailing list and received a failure notice similar to the following:

Hi! This is the ezmlm program. I'm managing the newsletter@mysite.org
mailing list.

I'm working for my owner, who can be reached at
newsletter-owner@mysite.org.

I'm sorry, the list moderators for the newsletter list have failed to act on
your post. Thus, I'm returning it to you.
If you feel that this is in error, please repost the message or contact a
list moderator directly.

--- Enclosed, please find the message you sent.

This message indicates that the post you sent was not moderated in the specified period of time. When this happens, the email is removed from the system and a notification like the one above is mailed to the sender. (For more information about how long a message can go unmoderated before it is removed from the system, see the related article.)

Troubleshooting this issue

Note: You need to be an Org Admin or Super Admin to perform the following steps.

The first thing you should do is verify that the list has one or more moderators configured. To do this:

  1. go to the Manage Mailing Lists page
    (http://www.mysite.org/kmlm/admin/manage_list?search_name=)
  2. find the list in question on the list
  3. click Subscribers
  4. in the Subscribers drop-down list, select: Moderator
  5. click: Search
  6. a list of any moderators assigned to the list displays

If there are moderators defined, verify that they have active user accounts and that their primary email addresses are correct. If there are no moderators defined, moderation requests are sent to the alias listmoderator@mysite.org. The next step is to check whether that alias is sent to any active email addresses. To do this:

  1. go to the Edit an Alias page
    (http://www.mysite.org/kmlm/admin/edit_alias)
  2. find the line for "listmoderator"
  3. look at the email addresses assigned to it

Are the email addresses valid? Are they for users still associated with the organization? Are there any email addresses listed at all or is a path to a directory on the file system listed instead?

Resolving the problem

If there are valid moderators assigned to the list and/or the alias: Contact them directly regarding this issue. If you agree that the email should be moderated through to the list you will need to send a new copy of it. (When the time limit expired, the original message was removed from the system.)

If there are not valid moderators assigned to the list and/or the alias: You can do one of two different things:

  • subscribe one or more people to the list as moderators
  • edit the listmoderator alias to send to one or more people instead of redirecting to a directory on the filesystem

Note: The first option above will only send moderation requests for this particular mailing list; the second option will send moderation requests for any mailing list (including groups reflectors) that is configured to send to listmoderator@mysite.org.

After you have made the appropriate changes you will need to send a new copy of the failed email. (When the time limit expired, the original message was removed from the system.)
