What does it mean when I see "I don't accept message with empty Subject" in the mail logs?

While investigating an mail delivery issue, you may see a message similar to this in the logs:

2009-05-01 11:58:49 ... sent 5792 bytes from qp 21747
2009-05-01 11:58:49 + ... bounce: qp 21750
2009-05-01 11:58:49 + mylist@mysite.org ... failure: reject: fatal: Sorry, I don't accept message with empty Subject (#5.7.0)

Verify whether the user sent a message with a blank subject line to the list. Frequently, spam is sent with a blank subject line, so the default behavior is to send a bounce message to the sender. This message asks the sender to add a subject line and resubmit the email. Currently, the known best practice is to disallow blank subject lines (for security and spam reduction reasons).
